"Rose Light 3" flower oil painting, rose oil painting

This is the reason that I cut up a whole sheet of hardboard when I make my panels for painting......When you get on a roll and the paint is flowing and your hand is in tune with your head .....and your head is full of the beauty before you.......better have enough canvas or panels and paint on hand to let the inspiration run it's course.......

"Shasta Daisies" flower oil painting

I had to try the daisies one more time.....I really like the play of light and shadow on white flowers.....and it is a challenge to paint the petals with one brush stroke.

"Bee Balm" flower oil painting,

Bee Balm is another great flower.. It is sometimes called Oswego Tea and has a very distinct fragrance when the leaves are crushed...And the bees love it! So if you would like to attract more pollinators to your garden and add another interesting texture(and painting subject) to your landscape try this guy!

"Three Red Roses" flower oil painting, roses

Someone told me that three red roses represented the Trinity for them....That's not what I had in mind when I painted these.......but I like the analogy...I painted them because roses are such a challenge for me ...and particularly red roses.....Challenging but beautiful......Like the Christian walk.......

"A Rose Called Peace" flower oil painting, roses

I finally had to pull this rose from the garden this year.....Although I love them, I don't seem to be able to grow them very well....They always start out great and then sort of turn black and eventually stop producing blossoms. This variety is called "Peace" and it was lovely and fragrant..My problem is mostly the micro climate we are in here.....low and wet.....not good for roses...Oh well....If I can't grow them at least I can paint them!

"Rose Light 2" flower oil painting, roses

I don't seem to be able to settle on one subject or genre as an artist. I realize that some artists are able to build a following based on their style or subject matter..... and that can be a good thing.....There is just so much beauty in this world that God has created and so many interesting things that I want to paint them all.

There is a young lady from Palestine who has friended me on Facebook. I asked her how things are going in her world.....Her answer to me was "Something good, something bad, ....but your paintings make me peaceful"......A good reminder and confirmation that I should continue to paint what moves me .

"Occidental Park" Seattle city scenes, cityscape oil painting

I bring you one more cityscape of my hometown Seattle before I start posting a new series of flower paintings. Another rainy day scene, this time heading west on South Main St. by the little tram depot. Since most of this painting is foreground with a high horizon, the challenge was to get enough interest into the textures, colors and reflected light to draw the viewer into the scene.

"WinterTwilight on Big Valley Rd." oil landscape nocturn painting

We have had some late (for the Puget Sound anyway) winter snow and cold temperatures lately. This house is a few miles away on Big Valley Rd. It seemed an inviting refuge of warmth on a cold winter night.

"Starboard Tack" oil marinescape painting

Sailboats are a pretty common sight where we live. In fact Leigh's husband Jim builds them and works on them in his boat shop right next to the Knowles studio. This one is heading out for some day sailing up on Orcas Island in the San Juans.

"Cows on Whidbey Island" oil landscape painting

I am going to post warm-up paintings that have been accumulating in the studio for the next several days. Between larger work I like to keep my hand in tune by doing smaller studies from life or from photos. This one is from a photo we took on Whidbey Island last summer.

"The Rendezvous" Seattle city scenes, oil cityscape painting

I couldn't help attempting to capture this story on canvas. It is based on one of those photos "shot from the hip" when I was lurking around in the city for reference shots. I can't remember the exact location but I was walking towards the Art Institute to meet up with my son Maury.

"Marina Boats" oil marine landscape

I found these boats at our local marina in Poulsbo, Washington. I was drawn to the great reflection of the overcast sky moving in to a clear day and the contrasts that created in the water with the white boats. These boats are parked near the port office which is a floating "office boat" I think that would be a great job! ...Except that I would spend too much time fishing.....or painting the scenery!.

I have included the under-painting for this work.....For awhile now I have been drawing my compositions with a "drawing brush" and then working out values with a brush using the same paint.

"Family Trio" Seattle City scenes, figurative oil painting

I was captivated by this little girl, so excited to be visiting the city even though it was raining cats and dogs...I tried to convey an intimate moment between this family surrounded by the frenzied activity and noise of the city.

"Into The Woods" figurative oil painting,

I love it when I am able to rescue a painting!!...Awhile back I worked on several paintings of my friend Alexa. I felt only one of them was good enough to post on this blog......but there was one I didn't want to give up on because I liked the back ground........so I set it aside and when the opportunity came up to enter a juried show in Port Townsend at the Northwind Art Center......I pulled it out and decided to rework the figure. The theme of the show is "Into the Woods" and I thought that this painting would be perfect if I could resolve the problems. In the original painting Alexa was facing forward. Everything was rendered well except for her face...Try as I would, I could not get the feel of her expression and the overall "story"of the painting to say what I wanted .....Sometimes you just have to get a cup of coffee and sit back and study your options when resolving issues in a composition.....and remember you are the artist!.....I finally decided to turn her around, going "into the woods".....Also, I changed the color of her jacket from dark to light, enhancing the contrast in that area.....Did I save the painting?... What do you think?

Still working on my images of the city in Seattle WA. I found this one from earlier in the fall and was re-inspired by my original interest in the reflections off the polished granite wall of this building.

There is something about this corner in Seattle that keeps inspiring me to create more cityscape paintings. In the distance you can see the sky bridge to the convention center. In the foreground, The Green Tortoise Hostel, a subject I have painted many times.

"The Picasso Exhibit" Seattle city scenes, oil cityscape painting

Recently there has been a Picasso exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. On the first day you were allowed free entry if you dressed in red!....What a hoot to see the long line of folks dressed in every shade of red. We saw quite a few Picasso's at the Cleveland Art Museum this summer so we skipped this one. From what I heard there were over 300 pieces of art!
This is a view of the front of the Seattle Art Museum. (SAM)
