"Ruby Beach" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Ruby Beach"  8x12 oil on panel

I continue to work from the reference photos and sketches I did from my trip to the Pacific Coast up in La Push, Washington State. The rock formations walking out to Ruby Beach are fantastic!  So many paintings here!  I did this smaller version to see if the composition would work on a larger canvas. Stay tuned for more coastal paintings!  =]

"Day Sailer" Bainbridge Island oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Day Sailer"   10x20 oil on panel  $950
Available through the J G Gallery, Winslow WA
206-842-2063

I used a lot of pallet knife in the execution of this painting.  Things were not going good from the start but I just didn't want to give up on it. So I used the old trick of scraping the whole thing down and coming back the next day with a fresh eye. I was still thinking of washing it and starting over when I picked up the pallet knife and started noodling around. I didn't care if I ruined it or not. That seemed to do the trick. The painting started to come to life... Life is like that sometimes...  Cultivate the ability to adjust your attitude and expectations a little in uncomfortable situations and the joy may return.  =]

This painting will be a part of an all gallery artist group exhibition titled "Offshore" at the J G Gallery in Winslow on Bainbridge Island for the month of March. There will be an opening on Friday, March 6th during First Friday Art Walk. Hope you can Make it!!

"Winter Driftwood" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Winter Driftwood"  9x18 oil on panel  $850

I came home with a plein air painting on my last trip out that I liked but the drawing was off in my opinion. Also it seemed chalky and washed out. I went right to the studio easel and painted this version from the plein air study and the photo which had quite a bit more contrast. Think I should try one more to see if I can split the difference....Painting is hard!!  But so rewarding when vision, eye and hand come together to create a painting with heart and soul.  I can't help but keep chasing it!

"Washington Coast at La Push" Seascape painting by Robin Weiss

"Washington Coast at La Push"  15x30 oil on canvas  $1400
Available through the Scott Milo Gallery  360-293-6938

When I was looking through my photos from a recent painting hike to Second Beach on the Washington Coast the design of shapes in a series of images taken on the edge of this tide pool really caught my eye! I  painted a small study and it was just as striking so I decided to take it larger and longer.

The challenge for me in a painting like this is to attempt what might seem impossible. To paint the illusion of air between the viewer and the distant objects. In other words the atmospheric distance. You do it by carefully adjusting edges and color. Bluer and softer in the distance, warmer with more contrast as you move into the foreground.

See this painting in person along with many others at the Scott Milo Gallery in March.  Joining me as featured artist for this exhibition will be Rowen Carey, Lorna Libert, Bithia Bjurman, Donna Nevitt Radtke and Ron Radtke.

"Dahlia Patch" Fower painting by Robin Weiss

"Dahlia Patch" 18x14 oil on panel  $980

For my upcoming featured artist show in March at the Scott Milo Gallery I wanted some flower paintings. I love painting flowers and haven't done any for awhile so I went through my reference photos and found a series of pictures from the Dahlia Patch outside the post office in Port Gamble.

I started this painting by toning the whole canvas  with a mixture of Quin Magenta
(M Graham color) and Cad Orange. The mix was a color similar to the mid tone Dahlia shade.  Then using a paper towel I wiped out the highlights and flower shapes very loosely. I tried to stay as loose as possible on the first layer filling in the whole canvas and graduating contrast from dark to light as I reach for the color in the sky. I splattered the canvas with dark and light thinned paint to add textural interest. As I added more layers of paint I picked out leaves and petals.  At that point it is good to set the work aside and come back with fresh eyes to make adjustments.

An exhibition reception will be hosted by the Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes on March 6th 2026 for all those who would like to see the paintings in person. Joining me in this fine art exhibition will be Rowen Carey, Lorna Libert, Bithia Bjurman, Donna Nevitt Radtke, and Ron Radtke.

I am very fond of M Graham paint!  I used it almost exclusively long before they sponsored me because of my love of alla prima painting. This paint will stay loose and fresh on the pallet longer than others.  If you would like to learn more about this fine product check out their website HERE

"Dosewallips Elk" Wildlife painting by Robin Weiss

"Dosewallips Elk" 18x24 oil on canvas  $1400

It has been another long interval of not doing much with the blog. Life has intervened in my usual routine of painting and posting. Life has a way of doing that but it always seems to circle back around to my internal drive and passion to create art... along with gallery friends urging me to produce fresh work.... =]

I'm back in the studio now during this frigid stretch of winter, cozy with music, paint and canvas.

The painting above has been around for awhile sitting on an easel in the studio. I decided to add Elk into the scene. It was the natural choice since this is an area that the Elk bed down along the Dosewallips river in the summer months. It was the touch of life I think it needed.

This painting along with a group of others I am working on and will post in the coming days, will be included in a featured artist exhibition at the Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes.  Hope you can make it to the opening but if not, check back here to see a preview of what will be hanging at Scott Milo in March!
