The Plein Air Washington Artists met at a favorite painting location in July. We reserved our campsites early for the Dosewallips State Park and spent a few days painting on the tide flats and when that got too hot....down by the river with our toes in the water. The weather was beautiful and lots of great paintings were created along with fun times gathering with PAWA members and friends. After being in this organization for awhile now, it seems like a big family!

I painted this one in the studio from photo ref I took in Carmel last year. I brought it down with me in case I needed a painting to hang in my space before the work on location started. This is one of the paintings I did on the street in CB this summer. I always love painting in town but it presents a challenge during tourist season. I usually get up early, have a coffee at Camp Four and then set up about 8am when the light is great, the shadows are still long and the only folks around are locals

After the Carmel Art Festival and many adventures we drove the van to Crested Butte Co to paint for the Oh Be Joyful Gallery. The weather was glorious and I was able to get some work done. Also great to re-connect with Nick Retti and the crew at OBJ!  A bonus surprise was being there at the same time as Jim Wodark and getting to see some of his recent work for a new show.

Above is the reworked version of this painting. I wasn't satisfied with some of the proportions in the original. Because it was one of only two of my paintings done at the Carmel Art Festival not to sell I decided to touch it up in the studio which turned into a pretty thorough rework. It's always risky to do! I'll let you decide whether I succeeded.  The original version is below.
 

I went back to Rocky Point with Maury for another day of painting the beauty of the California coast on the Monterey peninsula.  There was a Haze in the morning that quickly burned off. I have painted this view before and this amazing piece of Gods creation never fails to inspire me!

This is one of the two paintings that didn't sell at the festival in Carmel and is available. I will probably use it for reference in a larger work.

I didn't get a great photo of this painting which often happens when paintings sell at events. In the chaos you forget to set it it up for a good photo and then it sells and is in the wind.. I had such a fun time painting at a favorite location that had been closed for awhile and now is tentatively open to artists, I spent a lot of time photographing this area so I can do some studio paintings this winter. This painting also received an honorable mention award from juror Brian Blood, an added bonus!  =] Hope I can get back to Carmel next year!

 There is a road in Carmel a lot of tourists take that loops around the golf course and eventually gets you to the shore. Artists love it for the interesting coast line and lots of parking. It's also a great spot if you just want to hang on the beach.

I went back to the same spot and did a larger version of this study. I still like this one the best.

It was such a pleasent place to paint especially in the early morning that I went down to the Carmel River State Park for another view.  I set up with my toes in the sand to try and capture this corner of the marshy area of the river. The painting went well and I was liking what was happening on the canvas. All good right?  until I picked up the easel and the painting popped out of the mast and landed face first in the grainy sand....sheesh!,,,,I tried to wash it off as I heard that could work (with oil paint)...no-go, so I packed it in my carrier and let it sit over night. Early the next morning reinvigorated with a large espresso I took the painting back to the parking lot and painstakingly scraped the sand off the painting and repainted portions that needed it.  End of story, this painting won the Artists Choice Award at the Carmel Art Festival 2023. A good lesson for me on persevering and not giving up on a painting!  Hope you never give up on striving for excellence in your life and work !
