"Fishing at Lagoon Point" Whidbey Island landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Fishing at Lagoon Point"  12x24 oil on linen panel  $1200

I have posted most of the work I did on location during the Whidbey Island Plein Air Festival. This one is a studio painting done from photos I took near where we stayed in Green Bank. It is a favorite spot for fishing from the shore. The light was fading fast when I walked out to Lagoon Point so only enough time to get a few shots.  This painting will be included in the group show coming up in November at the Scott Milo Gallery. Hope to see you at the opening , November 5th!

"Ala Spit" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Ala Spit" 12x12 oil on panel  $800

I have been painting on Whidbey Island for many years but had never been to this location. An artist friend who lives on the island told me about Ala Spit and I decided to drive up to the north end to see it. Turns out it is a great fishing and clamming area with beautiful views of Hope Island and the inner Puget Sound. I spent a very pleasant morning watching the eagles hunt and capturing this scene.

"Island Farm" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Island Farm" 16x20 oil on linen panel   $1200
Available through the Scott Milo Gallery 360-293-6938

Island Farm was my most ambitious plein air painting to date. I passed by this scene in the early morning on my way to Ala Spit during the Whidbey Island Plein Air Festival in 2021. After spending the morning at the spit I called Maury to meet me at the farm where I found a great spot off the highway to tuck in and set up.

I knew this scene would make a great painting so I pulled out my biggest 16x20 panel and got to work. I approached it the same way I do most plein air paintings starting out with a underpainting in Quinacridone Rust and working out composition and value structure after studying the scene through my viewfinder.

I also knew if I could nail the atmospheric distance in the background I could have fun with the foreground elements so I started with the architecture of the barn and outbuildings, filling in the tree/shrub line along the water and then working from the sky down to the top of the field softening edges as I went.

"Admiralty Head Lighthouse 2021" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Admiralty Head Lighthouse 2021"  10x20 oil on panel   $900
Available through the Scott Milo Gallery 360-293-6938

I have painted this scene so many times now I just titled it the same as the others with the date added. Ha!

It is a great view of the lighthouse on Whidbey Island. Hard to resist! I painted it with snow on the ground one year during a freak snow storm. Sometimes you just need a long format canvas for compositions like this. I was able to get the distant point of land near Ebeys Landing which takes you through the painting and into the distance. This one will also be in the November group show at the Scott Milo Gallery.

I had to go back to 2013 to find the post from the freak snow storm. Not all my paintings get posted to the blog and there have been several of this lighthouse that didn't make it...Click HERE to see another version of this well known scene and the full story.

Be sure to subscribe to my blog so you don't miss information on upcoming shows and workshops.

Happy Trails!  =]

"Classic Coupeville" Whidbey Island pIein air by Robin Weiss

"Classic Coupeville" 11x14 oil on linen $800
available through the Scott Milo Gallery

No Whidbey Island Plein air competition would be complete without several impressions of Coupeville's iconic boat dock. This was mine. I've painted it several times but liked the textural, low tide, rocky, shelly debris in the foreground. I pulled out all my texture tricks including splattering the panel with dark and light paint.  This one will also be in the upcoming Scott Milo Gallery  group show opening November 5th

"Field of Gold" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Field of Gold" 10x14, plein air, oil   $800
Available through the Scott Milo Gallery  360-293-6938

Maury and I stayed in a cool Air BNB on Whidbey Island during the festival. It was in Green Bank on the north end not too far from Langley. Not very far away was a dog park of about 40 acres with a winery and amazing views of the sound. We went up there several times to paint. This is one of the paintings I completed there.

It never made it into the competition as we were only allowed three entries...but it will be in an upcoming group show at the Scott Milo Gallery in November along with many other recent plein air paintings. The opening will be on November 5th during Anacordes Gallery Walk. hope you can make it!! Click on the highlighted text for more info!  =]

"Washington Gulch Wildflowers"

"Washngton Gulch Wildflowers" 10x20 oil on panel    SOLD

Ann and I did take our trip to Colorado and spent a very enjoyable week in Crested Butte!  We found a great vintage chalet in Mt. Crested Butte, the little ski village a few miles up the mountain from CB proper.

The Nordic Inn

I got to work right away inspired by the beauty of the mountain scenery and amazing wildflowers bloomimg everywhere!  We escaped the "heat dome" bringing 105+ temps to Washington State just in time! At ten thousand feet the temps in CB were perfect!

Glad to be in CB!

Artist friend Susie Hyer came up from her home in Evergreen to paint with me for a few days. We are both represented at the Oh Be Joyful Gallery in CB. Check out the website HERE to see all the paintings we left for the gallery to exhibit.

So much more fun to paint with friends!  We went to Washington Gulch where the wildflowers are amazing! The above painting was my interpretation of the scene.

Susie and the Lupines

I did nine paintings in and around Crested Butte while we were there. I will try and post them all!...I'm finding it impossiple to keep up on the blog but will keep trying!

There is too much beauty to be out painting rather than sitting at my computer!!

Hope you are finding beauty in your world too!

"Are You my Mother" Figure painting by Robin Weiss

"Are You my Mother"  9x16 oil on panel   NFS

One of the favorite childrens books of our kids and now our grandkids is "Are You my Mother"  written by P D Eastman back in 1960.  Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association  listed the book as one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children."   It was one of the "Top 100 Picture Books" of all time in a 2012

I have been documenting our grandkids off and on since they were born as I get  photos that I think will make a good painting.  Recently they moved to a new house with a lake and more property to collect a variety of pets and farm animals. This is Brooklyn with "Bill" and "Webster".  The photo with the ducks looking back at Brooklyn made me think of the childrens book.

At right is Brooklyn at 3 or 4 yrs playing with the piano at our house during one of the many sleepovers at grandmas.

"April Still Life" still life painting by Robin Weiss

"April Still Life"  8x8 oil on panel   $300

The cobalt blue vase.....Yes, I still have it!   I stuck a few apple blossoms in it when they were blooming beautifully and much too briefly this spring.  Against the red drape they really stood out. Maybe this is the painting I will enter into the Little Gems Show this year....The deadline is fast approaching! Yikes!

I'll wait another day and see what you all think... =]

Speaking of the Little Gems Show...This is the annual small works show put on by the Plein Air Washington Artists group and hosted by the Scott Milo Gallery in Anacordes, WA. It is always a spectacular presentation of fine art by Washington Artists. Stop by if you get the chance!

Also at the Scott Milo Gallery in November will be a group show including myself along with a few other members of PAWA, Chris Troyer, and Roger Small.

"Poulsbo Marina" plein air marinescape by Robin Weiss

"Poulsbo Marina" 9x12 oil on linen, plein air   Sold

I always carry my portable painting gear with me pretty much everywhere I go.

Since Covid, instead of spending my mornings working on computer stuff at the coffee shop I have been walking around Poulsbo.

I usually call my mom and see whats happening on the waterfront.

At 7am that mostly includes my waterfront animal friends like Bruce the seagull or Aaron the Heron.

Well, the coffee shop is open now and here I find myself working on the computer again....I have a lot of paintings to post and catch you all up with! ....but I am not going to abandon my morning walks!

I found this friendly fellow out enjoying the morning quiet before the big boats come in for the weekend.

I feel like that when I can find a quiet place to paint outside and just enjoy the beauty of our little town. I grabbed the pack and walked out to the end of the boat dock to paint the above scene. Such a wonderful morning.

Have you developed some enjoyable new routines since covid?   Hope so!

"Mountain Pass" Original landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Mountain Pass"  On the way to Colorado
20x20 oil on canvas  Sold
Available through the Oh Be Joyful Gallery, Crested Butte CO

Designated one of Daily Paintworks Picks of the Day!!  Thanks DPW!

We have been driving the back way to Colorada the last few years and I find it much more enjoyable and inspiring rather than the main highways that make it unavoidable going through Salt Lake City. Nothing against Salt Lake City. It's a fun destination to go and stay awhile....just no fun if you are trying to get from point A to point B...and it is in the way!  But there are some great back road ways to get there and most you can travel just as fast. Going through West Yellowstone, Teton National Park and then past the Wind River Mountains down into Colorado offers views like the one above.  This painting is on display in Crested Butte, CO at the Oh Be Joyful Gallery. Check out their website HERE

Thanks for following along on the journey!   Have fun and stay creative!

"Valley Vista" Colorado landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Valley Vista" 16x20 oil on canvas
Available through the Oh Be Joyful Gallery , Crested Butte CO

Lots going on these days!  Been awhile...again...since my last post!  Our plans to travel to Crested Butte are all set and I am looking forward to painting in Colorado again! I will be meeting up with a few artist friends and spending some time pushing paint in the CB area for the Oh Be Joyful Gallery. Can't wait!  Check out the website HERE for more info on the summer shows in 2021

Just a few of the things that have been taking up a lot of time besides trying to get out and paint as much as possible:

I am also writing a blog for the Plein Air Washington Artists and they are meeting a LOT, at different

paintouts around Washington state!  This is a very vibrant, welcoming group of passionate plein air painters and we love creating together. If you are a painter in WA consider becoming a member of this group. You can't help becoming a better artist painting with a group like PAWA. Check out the blog HERE

The Feedburner widget that folks use on my blog to subscribe and get new In Plein Air blog posts into  your email is going away and I am replacing it with a new Feedblitz widget. That has taken a lot of my very limited tech skills to get done. Hopefully there will not be any delays or problems, but if you experience any issues with getting new posts please let me know.  Thanks!..  and Thanks so much for being faithful subscribers. I don't spend much time checking all the stats on who and how many follow In Plein Air ...but I know you are out there and I appreciate you all!!

Several shows in which I am participating are coming up! As I already mentioned the Oh Be Joyful Gallery will be having their Summer Showcase and I will have some work there.

The Roby King Gallery in Winslow on Bainbridge Island will be having a group exhibition titled "The Gift of Water". I will be showing new, water themed paintings along with artist friends, Jane Wallace, Luke Tornatsky, David Eisenhour, and Brooke Borcherding.  August 6-29th 2021.

The Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes , WA will be having a group exhibition, November 5-30th with Lorna Libert, Carol Barrer, Christine Troyer, and Roger Small ...along with myself, Robin Weiss. =]

The Scott Milo Gallery will also be hosting this years Littles Gems Show, an annual PAWA small works show featuring many of the best painters in Plein Air Washington Artists group. This year the judge of awards will be Kathleen Dunphy.

I have been chosen as the Poster Artist for the Edmonds Art Festival and will be showing work at the Francis Anderson Gallery in conjunction with the Edmonds Art Festival 2021. This show has been delayed since the onset of covid so it will be good to get back to normal in the PNW with art shows and festival this summer!

I will also be showing some new pieces at the Cole Gallery during the month of August......Whew! That seems like a LOT ....and that's not all the stuff going on!   But enough to post for now!

Be well and stay creative!

"Coral Cove" Oil, landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Coral Cove" 20x16 oil on canvas
$1200   360-779-3940

"Old Squaw Road" 9x12 oil on panel
plein air painting done on location in
 Lander Wyoming , 2020

Life has been pretty busy lately. We are looking forward to attending the 5th Annual AIS Small Works Showcase in Charleston SC. One of my paintings done in Lander Wyoming before our epic hiking trip into the Wind River mountains was juried into this show. It is very exciting for me and quite an honor to get into any AIS juried show as the competition is pretty strong.

It worked out well since we were already planning on traveling to Florida to participate in a fundraising and awareness event for the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens which is undertaking a major renovation. My wife's sister Nancy is on the board and invited me to be a guest artist for the event. I will be giving painting demonstrations and teaching an Introduction to Plein Air Painting workshop . So the schedule is full but we are really looking forward to more warm, sunny  climes!   Hope all in your world is sunny too! Things are looking up!  Stay safe and stay creative!

"Paris Cafe" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Paris Cafe" 8x10 oil on panel   $500

This one has been circulating around for over a year now. It was one of those paintings that had to age a bit before I started to like it. Now I really like it.  Interestingly, I did not paint this in Paris even though we had recently returned from a month in France and Italy. I didn't even paint it from the hundreds of reference photos taken while we were there.

At the Plein Air Washington Artist group end of the year shindig in Edmonds they had several still life setups to paint and a couple model stations too. These two models pretended like they were sitting in a restaurant or café. While painting away I was somehow transported back to Paris and ended up with this scene of a late night jazz café in the City of Lights.  Surprised myself because the scene in front of me looked nothing like this. I'm not sure I could even paint her shimmering dress again If I tried...So glad my wife and I took that trip when we had the chance!  Hope you will some day too!  =]

"Makayla and Emmy at the Poulsbohemian" original portrait painting by Robin Weiss

Makayla and Emmy at the Poulsbohemian
16x16 oil on linen   SOLD

Makayla worked as a barista at the coffee shop too. Then she decided to get married, have a baby and be a mom. I captured a few reference images when she came in for a visit with Emmy and thought they would make a great painting. Now it's on the wall in it's rightful place at grandmas house....    =]   We are all so happy for you Makayla!  You will be the best mom!

"Ruthie at the Poulsbohemian" original portrait painting by Robin Weiss

"Ruthie at the Poulsbohemian" 20x16 oil on linen

I did a series of recent portraits after getting a commission to paint a friends daughter. I needed to get some practice. I took a few photos of friends at the local coffee shop and used the reference for these portraits which I painted on some 16x20 linen panels that were given to me.

Ruthie was a barista at the Poulsbohemian. She is an artist too and could make a coffee so pretty you didn't want to drink it! Recently she took on a full time job doing other things. We will all miss her fun antics and the artistic encouragement we shared. Thanks for all those great cups of coffee Ruthie!

"Art Budd at the Poulsbohemian" original oil portrait by Robin Weiss

"Art Budd at the Poulsbohemian"
20x16 oil on linen Panel

Recently I received a commission to do a portrait. Not what I am used to or what I feel very good at. Mostly I have procrastinated on studying and practicing the art of the portrait. I thought it would be good to warm up by working on some photos of friends I talk with in the mornings at the local coffee shop in Poulsbo called the Poulsbohemian.

Art is one of those buddies. He does some artwork too.  We usually talk about the books we are reading. Art volunteers at the library and we have traded books a bit.  I caught him in the sunlight on the patio and snapped this shot.

I used a grid program for this photo to help with proportions and then sketched it pretty quickly on the panel with a drawing brush. First I applied a thin, warm wash of color and let it set for awhile. I started with the darks first and then worked the whole canvas leaving a lot of the underpainting. Going back to the face I used more paint and finished with more detail drawing the eye to the center of attention.

I have since done a few more portraits of friends and family I will post in coming days. Hope all is well with you and your family!  Stay safe and stay creative!

"Ettas" Seattle city oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Ettas" 11x13 oil on linen  $800
Available through the Cole Gallery

It's nice to remember those pleasant excursions into Seattle pre-pandemic, when you could sit in the sun and have a wonderful lunch at any of hundreds of great sidewalk cafes around the city. Those times have radically changed over the last few years starting with political unrest, riots the covid pandemic and now a combination of all three. With the division fueled by polarized politics and misinformation it's hard to feel there is anything one person can do. It may be why folks are turning more to the arts for creative and mental refreshment.  I know I am selling more art than ever right now and the studio is a refuge for Leigh and myself who continue to make art and teach art.

"December"  20x20 oil on linen
Available through the Cole Gallery

"Ettas" somehow fell through the cracks on my blog.  It was painted in early 2019 for a gallery show in Seattle and was one that never sold. I lost track of it till recently and now it will be in a new exhibition at the Cole Galley in Edmonds, WA through March 4th 2021. If you get the chance, Cole Gallery is still open for viewing art. (following pandemic protocols we are now very familiar with.)

Check out the Cole Gallery website HERE or call Denise for more info at 425-697-2787

Stay safe and stay positive. I'm confident we will be able to eat out at our favorite sidewalk cafe again soon ...without a mask!  =]
