"Bloedel Cherry" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Bloedel Cherry"  6x8 oil on panel  $350

Grateful I was able to wander around the Bloedel Reserve last week and get one little plein air painting in. The cherry tree was at peak bloom so I had to try and capture it.

Bloedel has an art program where you can take workshops in painting and other stuff, or if you are an artist, apply for a residency program where you can stay on site and work in your discipline. It's pretty cool!

"Pond Lilies" flower painting by Robin Weiss

"Pond Lilies"  7x7 oil   $500

When Maury was little I built a pond in the back yard for him to put fish and frogs in. We both really enjoyed it and now after starting his own life working and living in another town the pond still thrives with fish, occasional frogs and these pond lilies which bloom every summer.

I painted this on a smooth, gessoed panel, the kind I used to paint on all the time before I started using oil primed linen "Centurion" panels.  They definately have a different feel when painting and produce a more smooth finish.  Worked pretty good for this painting.

"Sunlit Vase" still life painting by Robin Weiss

"Sunlit Vase"   6x8 oil on panel, framed   $500

Waiting for the weather to break I have been working from old photo reference in the studio. Over the years I have organized all my photos in files by category and then by year so it is easy to go back and look up flower photos, cow photos or specific regions for landscape or seascape, boats etc. These photos may lay dormant in my external hard drive for years and then I will get a whim to paint a series of something like flowers. If the weather is bad I can still work from my reference images.

Sometimes I will go back 10 years or more like in this case and paint a scene I have painted before. It's fun to compare how I approached the subject then and now.

Spring has sprung! The weather has been beautiful and I am finding myself in flower mode...It usually begins with still life paintings and moves to whatever is bursting with color and new life.  Speaking of color and new life, I hope your Easter was full of family and hope for the future as you contemplate what the resurrection of Jesus means to you.

My first workshop of 2026 is coming up fast! I will be teaching a Still Life workshop on Saturday , the 25th of April from 10am-4pm at the Black Barn Fine Art Studio in Kingston WA. I hope you can join us!  Register on the Black Barn Fine Art Studio website HERE
