"Sunlight on Apples" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Sunlight on Apples"  14x18 oil on panel
Juried into the OPA National Exhibition
SOLD

This painting completed in 2021 is another one that slipped through the cracks and was never posted to my blog.  There are several apple trees on the Knowles Studio grounds that always get me inspired when the light comes through the leaves in the spring sunshine. I went out and did several plein air paintings and then did this studio piece. I love how the apples seem to glow from the inside when the light hits from behind and I tried to capture that by glazing thin layers of paint.

UPDATE:  "Sunlight" has been juried into the Oil Painters of America National Show at Reinert Fine Art in Charleston South Carolina exhibiting from March 31st - April 30th 2023

Also don't forget to order a 2023 Robin Weiss Fine Art desk calendar for the art lovers stocking in your family.  $10 includes tax and shipping.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!

"October on the Dosewallips" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"October on the Dosewallips" 9x18 oil on panel   Sold

Took a couple trips to the Dosewallips State Park in 2022 to paint. One was a fun trip with some members of Plein Air Washington Artists and another with painting buddy Jim Lamb. Paintings from both trips were recently accepted into the PAWA, Plein air to Studio, Winter Show hosted by the Cole Gallery this year in Edmonds WA.

"Morning Walk" Richland plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Morning Walk"  11x14 oil on panel    $700

Several days during the Richland Plein Air competition we painted across the street from Gallery at the Park in a beautiful setting along the river. This is the park that gives Gallery at the Park its name.  It was fun talking with all the walkers who strolled by. They were all interested in the painting and many came to the opening and bought work. This is the best time to hand out your pamphlets on show times and dates an important part of the work in any plein air competition!

Brooke Borcherding painting at the park

Me and Maury teamed up with artist and PAWA member Brook Borcherding for this competition.

We had a great time painting together and playing ping pong after the days work was done.

Always great to meet up with fellow artists and spend time doing what you love.  That's the best part of any plein air show!

"Sealock Grove, White Poplars" Richland plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Sealock Grove, White Poplars"  8x16 oil  $800

My son Maury and I registered for the PAWA plein air event in Richmond together. We had a great time exploring the area and came across this park near the Snake River that had a beautiful grove of White Poplars. It must have meant something to the community because they named it the Sealock Grove. We spent the most part of a beautiful day painting there.

BTW, This painting won Best of Show at the opening. Grateful for this award granted by the good folks at Gallery at the Park, Richland WA.

"Snively Road" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Snively Road"  10x12 oil on panel     $800

I had not painted much in the Tri Cities area when we headed to Richland for the Plein Air Washington Juried Plein event hosted by Gallery at the Park in May 2022.  Other members of PAWA  like Laura Gable who are locals suggested we drive down Snively Rd. to a view of Rattlesnake Mountain  with the Snake River in the foreground.  That view didn't inspire me but I had to stop and paint this section of the road on the way back....That's how it goes sometimes. You have to go with your gut feeling about what moves you to paint a scene.

I was in a spot where I could effectively use a trick to gauge the value of the color of the grays I was seeing by holding up my brush with a value and color of paint on it that I though was close. I was usually fooled by my eye into gauging it lighter than it is. It's almost always darker than you think.

When I started using more techniques like this to gauge value and color my paintings became more authentic.

"Sawdust Hill Road" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Sawdust Hill Road"  9x12 oil on panel  SOLD

When I was trying to get in shape for the Wind River pack trip in 2020 I would hike up to the top of Sawdust Hill 3 or 4 times a week. At the top is a great view of the Olympic mountains on a clear day. When the Scotch Broom is in full bloom it transforms the landscape around here with color and made it even more beautiful.

This painting sold recently at the Front Street Gallery in Poulsbo. The gallery is all ready for the holiday season with lots of great affordable gift ideas from local artists!  Poulsbo is a great town to come visit! Put it on your day-cation list!  You'll love it!..  And don't forget to stop by the Front Street Gallery!!

"Eglon Beach" original plein air painting by Robin Weiss

Eglon Beach  6x8 oil on panel   SOLD

Another painting that sold at Arts in the Woods studio tour last weekend.  Think I mentioned that 6x8 panels are handy for those plein air outings when you are limited on time and this was one of those. I had a little time to paint and went down to a favorite location on the way to Hansville. This little beach is off the radar of most folks that aren't familiar with the area so it is usually pretty empty.

A great location to practice designing with driftwood!!  I have been working on this challenge for years now. It's getting easier for me to suggest distant driftwood and use the foreground logs to draw you into the scene. Although I only spent maybe half an hour on this painting what I was shooting for in design worked pretty good. This is a study that can be worked into a successful larger studio work and I may do that!!

"Port Townsend Cloudscape" original plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Port Townsend Cloudscape" 8x6 oil

This small study from Port Townsend was fun to paint. The object was to capture the clouds that were moving fast. I used a smaller canvas so I could paint quick!  This little painting is still available at Arts in the Woods studio tour 2022. Stop by the Knowles Studio and say hi!

"Morrowstone Point" original plein air painting by Robin Weiss

Morrowstone Point  6x8 oil on panel  SOLD

It's a challenge to get the immensity and majesty of some scenes you experience in nature down to a panel that is 6x8 inches. sometimes it works and other times, not. I think it worked in this piece and was confirmed when the painting sold yesterday in a presale before Arts in the Woods studio tour 2022. I have a whole box of these panels that will be for sale this weekend.

I often pull out a 6x8 when painting conditions outside are sketchy. When the weather is not cooperating or time constraints only give you a few minuets. This painting was done in about 20 mins. The other big challenge is translating a small study into a large studio painting. If I ever get stretch of free painting time I might try it with this composition...... I'll keep you updated!

"Wild Wenatchee" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Wild Wenatchee" 18x24 oil on canvas   $1800

A great road trip in Washington state is what they call the North Cascade Loop. It takes you past this stretch of the Wenatchee river after you go over Stevens Pass on the way to Leavenworth. I stopped to snap a couple photos of the fall color and a few years later did this studio painting.  It will be available at Arts in the Woods Studio Tour coming up this weekend the 11th, 12th and 13th. Hope to see you there!

"Dappled Aspens" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Dappled Aspens" 16x12 oil on panel $1125
Available through the Oh Be Joyful Gallery
Crested Butte, CO  970-349-5936

This painting will not be at Arts in the Woods this year because it is in one of my favorite places in the country, Crested Butte Colorado!  The Oh Be Joyful Gallery in CB is owned and operated by artist Nick Reti. Nick along with an amazing staff has been representing some of the top plein air and representational artists in the nation. A big bonus of being represented by the Oh Be Joyful is getting to travel south to Colorado every couple years to paint the stunning beauty of the area.  The painting above was done from plein air and photo ref. done summer of 2020 near Lake Irwin just outside Crested Butte.

"Mount Baker from Artists Point" original plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Mount Baker from Artists Point" 12x16 oil  850

If you have been following my blog for awhile you have seen various views of Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker from Artists Point. It is a favorite painting location for most plein air painters in Washington state. I try to get up every year and I got the chance last month before the wet weather got started. There was still smoke in the air from local wildfires.  I picked up painting buddy Mark Bistranin on the way and we spent a spectacular day visiting tourists from around the world and capturing the beauty on canvas.

"Mount Rainier Ridgeline" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Mount Rainier Ridgeline" 24x36 oil on canvas   SOLD

Earlier this year our extended family on my wife Ann's side got together in Washington state for the 2022 family adventure. This included family from Ohio, Florida and Ireland!  We had a great time hiking and exploring the Pacific Northwest from whale watching in the San Juans to staying at the Paradise Lodge on Mount Rainier.  I didn't get to do any painting but was able to gather a lot of great reference photos. The larger studio work above resulted from those photos.

You can watch a montage of our family trip on youtube HERE

"Reflection Lake" with Mount Shuksan original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Reflection Lake"  with Mount Shuksan 12x24 oil on panel

Continuing on with paintings that have slipped through the cracks is this studio work from last years trip up to Artists Point in the Mount Baker National Park. In fact after researching my files and checking the gallery pages of those representing my work I am not sure what happened to this painting! Pretty sure it sold!

It seems the last couple times I have been up to Artists Point there has been smoke in the air from wildfires. Last year the smoke came from as far away as Canada.  This year there was smoke too from fires closer in the Cascades. It makes for interesting atmosphere but would sure rather not have those fires!

This view of Shuksan from Picture Lake has been painted many times by myself and other artists. You would think I'd get tired of it but when you get up there and get out of your car and walk around the lake it is hard not to try and capture the majesty of this iconic northwest scene.

"Eglon Beach in Winter" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Eglon Beach in Winter" 11x14 oil on panel, framed  Sold

Now I have the chance to post some paintings that have slipped through the cracks.

This painting of Eglon beach completed last year has been hanging at Greenwoodes Farm Organic Bakery in Hansville. A very cool little bakery/restaurant in Hansville, WA . I hope they continue to do well.  Hansville is a great location to take a daycation....Ha! That could be there moto... =]  Anyhow, lots to do in Hansville ...The lighthouse beach at Point no Point!..for one...and lots of great hiking around Foul Weather Bluff.. etc. But the best part is you can make Greenwoodes your first stop for some coffee and a sweet pastry!  Check out the artwork while your there! I have several paintings of the area on display..  =]

"Sal's Boat"  10x12 oil on panel  $750
Available through the Cole Gallery
425-697-2787

As I was painting this down at the Edmonds Marina everyone was walking by and saying "Oh that's Sal's boat"....I was hoping Sal would walk by and see it as I already sold a painting that way during the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout...  But Sal never did....  Anyway, you can see this painting and much more great local art at the Cole Gallery in Edmonds, WA. and for a limited time they are having a 20% off sale!

This is the last of the paintings done during the First annual Edmonds Plein Air Paintout and now I can get to some of the other stuff I have been working on! =] Thanks for stopping by!

One of the great things about plein air competitions is getting to hang out and paint with other artists. Brook Borcherding did a great painting down at the marina and we both had fun talking to all the people walking by.

"Down to the Beach" Kingston plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Down to the Beach"  9x12 oil on panel    Sold

There is a nice little beach in Kingston west of the ferry dock and close enough to visit if you have a longer wait. I wandered down one sunny afternoon during the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout hosted by the Cole Gallery and did this little study. It was the first painting to sell!  Apparently I am not the best judge of my own work. Debated about even entering it but glad I did!  =]

"Cascadia" Edmonds plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Cascadia"  8x16 oil on panel  Sold

One morning we were scouting around during the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout for a scene to paint and came to the Cascadia Art Museum. They have a lot of nice plantings around the museum and the building itself has some history in Edmonds. I decided on this view of the Trumpet flowers that were blooming and the entrance to the museum.

"Kingston Marina" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Kingston Marina" 9x12 oil on panel  SOLD

It was spitting rain when I set up for this painting in Kingston. I probably would not have tried this scene in the rain but I was still painting for the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout and wanted a variety of subjects and atmosphere. in this case it worked out. I was happy with the line drawing and as I was painting the owner of the foreground boat walked up and told me a little about the boat being an east coast design. He liked the painting so far and said he would come to the gala opening on Friday.  As it turned out this was not one of the paintings picked to show in the exhibition and he did not show up at the opening....but a few days later he came to the gallery and asked about the painting and I was able to sell the work to him.  Something like this has happened to me several times painting on location and it is really encouraging!

Another reminder about Arts in the Woods coming up second weekend in November!!  =]  There will be many panels like this one to choose from at once a year studio sale prices! Click HERE for more info...  Hope to see you there!!

"Thursday in Edmonds" Edmonds plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Thursday in Edmonds" 12x16 oil on panel  SOLD
Available through the Cole Gallery
425-697-2787

As the title suggests I painted this on a Thursday afternoon during the first annual Edmonds Plein Air Paintout hosted by the Cole Gallery in September. They plan on keeping the love ( of art )alive by hosting this fun paintout every year in September.

I thought this view would be a challenge with cars coming and going and the sun moving pretty rapidly but I also have learned from experience that once you set up on the street and commit to a scene the encouragement from passers by and the pressure of competition can motivate you to stick with it until something usually shapes up. I spent all afternoon on this painting.  Once you paint one car you have painted a hundred and as you get the brush miles under your belt you can change shapes and colors at will.

This painting is available through the Cole Gallery in Edmonds and they have a 20% sale going right now so it's a good time to buy art for the holidays!

"Apple Tree Cove on a Summer Day" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Apple Tree Cove on a Summer Day"  11x14 oil on panel  Sold

The great thing about the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout for me is that it encompasses both Edmonds and Kingston.  I spent several of the live paint days during the paintout working around Kingston. This is a view from the Kingston Slough a favorite local park with nice views of Apple Tree Cove and the Kingston ferry....Once again with my toes in the sand!  =]

This painting will be available at the Knowles Studio in Poulsbo for Arts in the Woods 2022.  If you plan on being in the North Kitsap area the second weekend in November don't miss this studio tour! The best in the Northwest!

"The Puyallup Arrives" Edmonds plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"The Puyallup Arrives" 11x14 oil on panel  $850
Available through the Cole Gallery
425-687-2787

I made a mistake in my last post.. This was the first painting I completed for the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout 2022..

I got off the ferry walked up to get my panels stamped and then right back to the beach. It was a beautiful hot sunny day. I have taught several plein air workshops through the Cole Gallery and we always walk down to  Bracketts Landing to do the demo while everyone hangs out to paint.  I have painted the ferry from this location a few times so I thought it would be a good place to start. If you can nail a good ferry painting it can set the stage for the rest of the week. Not that it's easy because the ferry is only docked for about half an hour. It took three cycles for me to get this one. But hey, toes in the sand, beautiful beach, beautiful view....I wasn't exactly suffering... =]

BTW, Cole Gallery is having a 20% off sale on a lot of the work currently in the gallery. They have some of the best representational artists working now and it may be a good time to pick up quality artwork at an affordable price!

November is coming up and that means Arts in the Woods!  Always the second week in November This year the 11th, 12th and 13th. Look for the yellow Arts in the Woods signs to direct you to participating studios or better yet, come to the Knowles Studio to start off the tour and we can provide you with maps and a cup of hot cider!  =]   Plus some amazing art from local artists. Check out the CAFN website for more info and to match up artists with the studio they will be displayed in HERE

"Morning Mist at the Marsh" Edmonds Plein Air painting by Robin Weiss

"Morning Mist at the Marsh" 8x16 oil on panel  $750

Awright!!  Gotta get back to the blog! Its been a month since we participated in the first annual Plein Air Edmonds Paintout and this was the first painting I completed for the competition. There was beautiful fog at the Edmonds Marsh and we set up quick to capture it.

The paintout was a blast and the Cole Gallery who hosted it has decided to do it again next year! That's good news for me since it is just a short ferry ride away and I love painting in Edmonds. I did eight paintings and will be posting them in the next week or so.

Thanks for stopping by!  =]

"Morning Shore" Whidbey Island Plein Air painting by Robin Weiss

"Morning Shore" 6x8 oil on panel      Sold

This was the first painting I did down by the Keystone Ferry during the Whidbey Island Plein Air competition.  The morning mist was just lifting and the soft shapes of driftwood and distant homes were appearing out of the fog. I laid my underpainting down quickly and then squinting I put in the dark and light shapes I saw not concerned yet with nouns but more with adjectives...in other words, not things but light and dark shapes. then going back in and modeling the cool light in the distance to the warmer tones in the foreground. This painting never made it into the show but is one of my favorites.
