Port Townsend Beach Combers" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Port Townsend Beach Combers"  11x14 plein air  SOLD

I've been combing my files for paintings that never made it to the blog. Found this one from 2022. I painted it on location in Port Townsend, posted it to Facebook and it sold pretty quickly. I like to get all my paintings recorded on the blog because sometimes collectors inquire about commissions to repaint a scene and my blog is like a journal of my painting adventures so I can go back and see where I was when a view was painted. Who knows how long these digital records will remain in cyberspace. I used to have my blog posts published in books by year but I stopped doing that a few years ago. Now I'm just content to enjoy living more in the moment while I am painting, put the beauty I see on canvas and send it out into the world.  What happens then I put in God's hands. I feel He has blessed the work and I feel pretty blessed and thankful to be able to do what I do.  Giving thanks for all of you who have followed me over the years and supported my work.  Hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.

"The Mansion at Bloedel" plein air by Robin Weiss

"The Mansion at Bloedel"  6x8 plein air   $350

I have posted about the amazing Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island in WA state before. It is a beautiful estate property bequeathed to the public to enjoy the gardens, rare plantings and facilities. The property has an endowment that keeps it well maintained with a professional staff and programs to keep visitors and sponsors coming back, including me!  Bloedel is a favorite local painting location and I am now a part on the program as one of the artist/facilitators who offer workshops on plein air painting at the reserve.

Check out their website here for more info on The Bloedel Reserve

"The Marsh at Magnuson Park"  11x14 plein air   $800

I spent some time touching up this painting from earlier this summer during the Plein Air Views of Washington event at the Magnuson Park Gallery. PAWA members gathered at the park to paint and exhibit at the gallery. It was a day of fun and fellowship with artist friends and family.

"Angel Farm" original landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Angel Farm"  14x18 oil on panel  Sold

Sometimes I go back through old reference photos and sketches to find new inspiration from past experiences.  This painting is derived from reference gathered in 2018 during Paint the Peninsula. A favorite local plein air painting event based out of Port Angeles and hosted by the  Port Angeles Fine Art Center. I spent several days painting at the Angel Farm. you can see one of my posts from that event HERE.  Sadly Paint the Peninsula is no longer an annual event. It had a good stretch of about five years and provided many fun times painting with artist friends from around the country. There are still many events to participate in and new ones popping up.  Locally, here in North Kitsap I will be showing my work at the Knowles Studio for Arts in the Woods Studio Tour. It's this weekend!  Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hope you can come out, say hi and see some of the best local art North Kitsap has to offer.

"The Copper Beech at Bloedel" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"The Copper Beech at Bloedel"  9x12 plein air oil   $600

Fall is definitely in the air!  I painted this magnificent European Copper Beech during my Master Class Workshop day at Bloedel Reserve last week. Sadly not enough signed up for my workshop and it was canceled so they didn't get to see me struggle through this composition. I think the combination of very wet weather, lateness of the season and folks feeling the pinch of the bad economy all contributed to lack of students in late October. If you have been hoping to attend one of my workshops the good news is I have several scheduled for next year in my neck of the woods through the Black Barn Fine Art Studio and a few yet to be scheduled through the Cole Gallery in Edmonds. Click on the highlighted text to link to registration info.

Lets paint together in 2024!!

"Yellow House" Port Gamble oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Yellow House"  12x16 oil on panel  Sold

"Yellow House" is a studio painting I did from photo ref. taken in Port Gamble last week when I was out painting. I know the fall color will not last long in the PNW so I took as many photos as I could to work from. I added a figure and a sailboat at the end for a bit of story and life in the painting. This one will be up at Arts in the Woods Studio Tour!  Hope to see you at the Knowles Studio in Poulsbo!  =]

"Port Gamble Fall" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Port Gamble Fall"  6x8 oil on panel  Sold

Port Gamble is right around the corned from us and a favorite place to paint especially in the fall! They planted a lot of eastern deciduous trees back when the town was founded in 1853. Before that it was a native village called Teekalet.  It is a protected historical site now and still has some of the original Victorian architecture.

The light moves pretty quickly this time of year. My strategy is to do small studies like this one  in 30-40 mins and then go larger in the studio.  Come see what I am working on at Arts in the Woods Studio Tour!

"Walking Green Lake" Plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Walking Green Lake" 8x16 oil on panel   SOLD

Been getting out as much as I can for fall painting such as it is in the Pacific Northwest. The color comes mostly from the Big Leaf Maples that are native here and then we have the imports from all over. My friend told me Green Lake had some nice color so I picked up Maury and we had a nice art therapy session as folks strolled around the lake taking in a beautiful fall day.

"Port Gamnle Chestnut" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Port Gamble Chestnut"  11x14 oil on panel  SOLD

It has taken awhile to get here but the fall color is coming out in the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't compare to parts of the east coast but we take what we can get. When the sun comes out you better get out and paint because it won't be long until the rains wash it all away! Ha!

I have been out painting and you can see a lot of my recent paintings at Arts in the Woods coming up right around the corner! There will also be a lot of special studio prices on panels and older work along with my annual calendars and cards. This year we have added hand made Christmas ornaments with some of my bird painting images on them.  If you are in the area stop by the Knowles Studio and say hi!  If you live outside Washington email me for info on special studio prices exclusively during Arts in the Woods Studio Tour.

"Shuksan Shadows" plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Shuksan Shadows"  11x14 oil on panel   $800

This is a very familiar view for artists and hikers who take the Mount Baker ski road up to Artists Point every summer. I've posted about this location many times before and you can link to one HERE. This summer I made it up one time and had a great day painting with Ned Mueller and his wife Karen. Both great artists! The above painting of Mount Shuksan I brought back to the studio for a little touch up. The other one I did sailed off the cliff into the abyss of unredeemable paintings....you know what I mean..=]

Hope you are able to get out and paint the beautiful fall color!!  This painting will, be available at Arts in the Woods coming up November 10th, 11th and 12th!  Hope to see you there!!

"Madrone Shadows" plein air, landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"Madrone Shadows" 6x12 oil on panel  Sold

They didn't have Madrone trees back east in Ohio where I was born. After a search I found out that south of the mountains in California they are called Madrones and north of those mountains Madronas,, either way they are striking trees with beautiful reddish bark. They grow often along the bluffs and cliffs of the Puget Sound.  Out looking for good painting spots I found the shadows cast along the beach by the Madronas in this scene intriguing enough to plant my easel and paint awhile....=]  Hope you find a good spot too!  =]   Speaking of a good spot....There are still spots open for my Masterclass workshop on introduction to plein air at the Bloedel Reserve this Saturday!  Register HERE .  Hope to see you there!!

"December Snow" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"December Snow"  11x14 oil on panel     SOLD

This painting sold shortly after I posted it on Facebook.  A lot of people like my snow scenes the best. Probably because I love painting snow!  It's just fun pushing the paint into abstract forms and then pulling out the realism. The tricky part, of course is intuiting when to stop..  Have fun with that!!  =]

"Winters Rest" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Winters Rest"  11x14 oil on panel    SOLD

This is a view from the Knowles Studio last December 2022 when we had a significant snowfall. I went through some of my snow photos from last year so I could make some seasonal paintings for the annual Robin Weiss Fine Art calendars... =]  Which will be available soon at Arts in the Woods Studio Tour!!.. At the Knowles Studio or thorough my website!! You can also see this painting in person at AITW 2023!  Hope you can make it out!

"Cruising Front Street" original oil painting by Robin Weiss

"Cruising Front Street"  18x14 oil on panel SOLD

If you sit outside the Poulsbohemian coffee shop in Poulsbo you will see this view.  I have painted it a few times before. There was a little wildfire smoke left in the air. Mid-afternoon allows the shadow shapes to move across the street and add some depth to the design.

You can view this painting and many more at Arts in the Woods.  Our local studio tour is coming up in November! Check out the website for open studios and participating artists HERE.

"A Good Spot" plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

"A Good Spot" 6x12 oil on panel     Sold

"A Good Spot"  was given a Merchandise Award by juror Kyle Ma at the Little Gems Show hosted by the Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes earlier this summer.  This annual, small works exhibition is organized by Plein Air Washington Artists for it's members and always brings in many collectors and art lovers to the Scott Milo Gallery who has graciously hosted this show for many years.

I've posted most of my event paintings from 2023. There are a few exhibition works and then a bunch of random paintings to get on the blog. As I have said before, Daily Paintworks draws from my blog and I use the DP gallery page for my website gallery page. It has all been working smoothly for 10 years or so but you know how the internet can change.....BTW , a shout out again to David and Carol Marine who operate Daily Paintworks. Carol is an amazing artist who has made a good career posting her work online and David is a genius in my opinion for his coding craft.  I hope they keep going for a long time!

Me and Ann on Crystal Mountain
While we are giving kudos, a shout out to my wife, Ann who does book keeping for me and is also helping with a news letter I am hoping to make a monthly report on latest events and workshops. If you are interested in getting my news letter, email  robinweiss@earthlink.net.

Currently, Diane Venti, curator of fine local art and beloved by so many in the local arts community has organized another pop-up art event in West Seattle. Contact her through Alki Arts HERE for more info and a list of artists and available paintings.

"Kingston Side" Edmonds and Beyond plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Kingston Side"  8x16 oil on panel   $750
Available through the Cole Gallery, Edmonds,  425-697-2787

Almost every little town in the Puget Sound region has a waterfront and a marina, Kingston has that and a ferry terminal that takes you to Edmonds by car or a foot traffic only "Fast Ferry"  to Seattle. I painted my third competition piece on an overcast day for Edmonds and Beyond, a new, annual plein air event hosted by the Cole Gallery in Edmonds.

"Walnut Coffee" Edmonds and Beyond plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Walnut Coffee"  9x12 oil on panel  Sold

A favorite coffee shop in Edmonds.  Just a cool place to hang out, get good food and good coffee.

I set up during Edmonds and Beyond plein air competition to capture the feel of this little neighborhood coffee shop. Kinda like the way the dog turned out. In my experience, you get one shot at including figures or animals in a urban setting when painting on location. It only takes a couple brushstrokes and if you don't get them right and try to fudge too much it can look overworked....It's tricky!!  The only way to improve is to keep trying it...  Have fun!  =]

This painting is available through the Cole Gallery.  425-697-2787.  Denise or Scott will make the purchase easy and enjoyable.  Thanks!!

"Afternoon Walk" Edmonds and Beyond plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Afternoon Walk"  16x12 oil on panel  Sold
Edmonds and Beyond plein air painting

The Cole Gallery in Edmonds hosted the Second Annual Edmonds and Beyond Plein Air Competition and Exhibition this year in August.  I had a fun time setting up on the sidewalk in Edmonds to paint "Afternoon Walk"  It won an Honorable Mention and sold during the Gala Exhibition. It's always a challenge to paint figures and get their gestures authentically while painting on location. This one took some touch up in the studio! Thankfully it was okay to use other reference in this competition...=]

The show is still up at the Cole Gallery if you get the chance to stop by and check it out. See the website HERE

"A Shady Place" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"A Shady Place" 7x10 oil on panel $450

This is the last painting I will be posting from the Whidbey Island Plein Air 2023 event. It's another take on the Coupeville Wharf. It was so hot at mid day during the event we kept looking for cool places to paint....that were cool places to paint! Ha! Not easy sometimes! But this was a great spot a short walk down to the beach from the town park, Nice shade in the afternoon and a view of the iconic red building in Coupeville.

I also did a demo painting in town to help promote the Pacific Northwest Art School. The painting was pretty bad but I felt good about describing my process of plein air painting. If you are interested in taking a workshop with me I am currently teaching one and two day plein air workshops through the Cole Gallery and Masterclass workshops facilitated by the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. You can find more info on their websites (highlighted links) or Robin Weiss Fine Art

"Hammons Preserve" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Hammons Preserve" 6x12 oil on panel  $450

Don't know for sure but I assumed someone granted their land to the county probably after passing with no one to inherit, which the Island then turned into this charming little dog park. Nice trails to walk and stunning views of the Sound. Perfect for wandering artists looking for a place to stand their easels! We all set up here for a pleasant afternoon of painting fun just a few minuets from where we were staying in Clinton during the Whidbey Island Plein Air 2023.

"Beach Bench" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Beach Bench" 6x8 oil on panel     Sold

I painted the Coupeville Wharf from three different locations this time during the Whidbey Island Plein Air.  Something about the barn red color against the cool blue/greens of sky and sea. It's a great subject and I also just love to paint on the beach!  Hope you made it to some soft sand beaches this summer.

In case you haven't heard yet there is an auction going on to support the community in Lahaina who lost so much during the devastating fires. You can bid on my painting donated for this cause by clicking on the highlighted link HERE.  The auction goes until Sunday and all proceeds go to the Maui Pono Foundation to help rebuild and support the Lahaina community.

"Sundown" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Sundown" 6x12 oil on panel      Sold

It's about a 45 minuet drive from Coupeville to Clinton where we were staying during the Whidbey Island plein air competition in August, You pass by Greenbank Farm on the way which has a 10 acre off leash dog park that has spectacular views of the Sound on both sides of the Island from a short walk to the top. There was just enough light left for me to park, hop out with my gear, run up the trail and capture the setting sun across the field of grass. I love to paint here!

"Coupeville Wharf" Whidbey Island plein air painting by Robin Weiss

"Coupeville Wharf"  11x14 oil on panel  $850

You may recognize this view from other posts in past years from the Whidbey Island Plein Air Competition on this blog.  Because it changes dramatically by time and tide, weather and seasons, I never tire of trying to capture the feel and atmosphere of the place. You can, at times, almost go back in time imagining the old sailing vessels plying the Salish Sea.

This painting is currently available through the Front Street Gallery in Poulsbo, WA  Stop by and see it in person or call for more purchasing info 360-508-6133

"Salt Marsh" Plein air landscape painting by Robin Weiss

Salt Marsh  6x9 oil on panel  $350

Summer temps were very high this year and when it reached afternoon I was looking for shade. I painted this little study under the bird watching platform.  Wishing I could capture the herd of elk that found their way to the marsh and spent the afternoon grazing on something out there.
