"Puzzled Cow Fenced In" oil landscape painting

I've painted this cow before too!......I call it the "Puzzled Cow" because it looks like it is made of puzzle pieces the way the spots interconnect....Also I'm sure she was puzzled by the artists guy invading her space.....she never moved!......The Puzzled Cow lives at Milky Way Farm out by Hansville

"Cold Morning" landscape oil painting

I got permission to walk a lovely farm on Big Valley road called "Living Waters", owned by friends , Bob and Betty Nielson. It was early on a frosty morning. All was quiet, fresh and beautiful.......I felt very close to the One who offers us living water , from which we will never thirst again...

"Below the SafeCo" Seattle train yards, oil painting

My last exploring trip to the city brought me to the train yards under SafeCo Field......lots of interesting scenes down there!.....This back lit view of the tracks and distant buildings captured my interest and I had to try and portray the hazy nostalgia of distant places connected by miles of rails.....

"The Banjo Player" Seattle city scenes, oil painting

A familiar scene down by Pike place Market in Seattle are the street musicians. I love to stop and listen.......and I have always wanted to go down with my guitar and try it but haven't worked up the courage yet........But I might have to pretty soon......

"Port Townsend Boatyard" marine landscape, oil painting

A bit of a different pallet for me........It's my interpretation of the sketch posted earlier using a lot of red and lime green........Don't ask me why , that's just how it turned out......I guess I was groping for complimentary colors .....anyhow I may paint the composition again, I like the way it divides the space.....

This kayaker was taking advantage of the nice weather and calm water to take a little paddle. The light was reflecting beautifully off the aluminum hull.....

"Diamond Lil" marine, oil painting

The sun finally did come out for over a week even though it has been foggy in the mornings...I managed to catch some scenes down at the marina in Poulsbo last week....I was at Checkers for my opening reception.....By the way, the show is still up for the rest of January....The sun reflecting off the white hulls of the boats caught my eye.

"First Light on Big Valley Road" landscape , oil painting

I added a color to my palette for this painting, hoping to achieve that inner glow to the light just appearing on a foggy morning. The color was a "modern" Thalo Blue...I think it helped..

After attending a workshop by a Gamblin rep, I learned about modern and classic pigments and how they can be used for different effects. Evidently the particles are much smaller and more uniform in the modern colors allowing for more reflection of light.......I mixed a bit of the Thalo into my usual French Ultramarine...

I've since moved on from the snow scenes......But I have a couple more to post. .....I loved painting the snow and did my best to take full advantage of it......Actually, they are talking about more snow on Sunday...=/....

"Alders in Snow 3" landscape, oil painting

I didn't intend to go so long between posts but I was having trouble photographing my paintings. I still haven't gotten around to making a good light box for taking pictures.....maybe I should make that my New Years resolution!.....

This is the last painting in the Alder series......I think I have them out of my system for awhile........There are two more snow pictures to post and then I will break out into the sun!!...The snow is all gone now.....its still cold at night but when the sun comes out during the day it warms up and then it is spectacular ....Also the foggy mornings have been creating some very interesting atmosphere........think I'll try a few foggy morning paintings....

"Getting Home" winter landscape, oil painting

This is a view out my window right by my computer where I work and paint on snow-bound days......I was sitting on the couch one evening as the second wave of the big storm was coming in....It had caught many travelers off guard and as the light dimmed I could see the lights of the cars plowing through the falling snow just trying to get home............I was grateful to be in my cozy house with the wood fire burning and the tea pot steaming....

"Alders and Firs in Snow" landscape, oil painting

Second in the Alder series. I'm still fascinated by the colors and textures within the bark of these alder trees. The snow and the reflection of the light seems to bring an inner glow to living things waiting for spring to unlock the celebration of growth that comes with the change of seasons and the order of creation. I will continue the struggle of trying to capture this drama on canvas with one more painting in this series.

"Alders in Snow" landscape oil painting

I stayed up late last night working on this Alder tree study, a subject I have been wanting to explore for a long time....The snow on the ground creating contrast and simplifying forms made them irresistible.
There is a trail at the end of Sawdust Hill Rd that meanders down to a beaver pond . I used to take long walks down there with my son Maury when he was little. Now there are houses and people I don't know.....and people who don't know me!...in fact I got kicked off this property when I was taking pictures...=/...I gave the person my card and told them what I was doing....They didn't seem impressed at all.....
You will probably see more of these studies...I'm working on another one...

"The View from Rockaway Beach" seascape oil painting

They say there is another big storm brewing.....and it is coming in tonight!....with lots of rain and WIND!........sheesh!........I have lots of BIG trees close to my house and the ground is saturated now so I am praying there is no damage here....
I am posting this painting I did about a month ago because it looks like a storm brewing......It was one of those paint overs ( unsuccessful painting that I worked over with paint left on my palette at the end of the day).....A view from Rockaway Beach on Bainbridge Island.

"Snowed In" winter landscape, oil painting

This is the last of the paintings of the heavy snow we had last week. Everything is beginning to thaw now and I have been painting the patches of snow left on the ground ...which has it's own challenges of texture , form and color..I am glad to be mobile once again ....but will miss the peaceful silence and beauty of the big Christmas snow storm of 2008....
