There are places close to home that have become go-to locations when I have a little extra time to get a painting in. The Kingston Slough is one of them. There is a little park on the bay across from where the Kingston Ferry comes in from Edmonds.  There is a parking lot for maybe six or seven cars. It's perfect for a quick plein air.  When I walked under the bridge that crosses the road I immediately noticed this sun drenched scene that I didn't notice before!  Take some time to explore your area and mark locations where you can easily pull off for a quick study.

This will be one of the paintings in "Impressions of Kitsap County"  A new group exhibition opening at the Roby King Gallery in Winslow, on Bainbridge Island on July 3rd during First Friday Artwalk.  This will be the first opening I know about where you can actually go and see the work and meet the artists since covid struck our area of the country.  All the mandated virus protections will be required  so I hope you can come out and get a little "art therapy"  and see the recent work done during the quarentine by Pamela Wachtler, Jane Wallis and Robin Weiss..   =]

This painting will be on display in a group show at the Roby King Gallery on Bainbridge Island, WA. ..titled "Impressions of Kitsap County". It will include work by Pamela Wachtler , Jane Wallis and myself. It will include many of the paintings from the surrounding area of Kitsap County completed during the quarantine.
Hopefully the opening will take place in person and we will be able to greet you at the show! That will be great!!  So hope you can come out! Will be posting the opening date soon. =]

Being from Seattle the first thing we look for in the morning is coffee!  After inquiring from a local where the best coffee was we ended up in a little brew shop tucked away in the Santa Barbara Marina......With lots of great scenes to paint!  Ann went to do some sight seeing and I unpacked the gear right there...

 Love it when I can leave my easel set up and walk around the corner for some great coffee at break time!

The day was overcast with a thick marine layer but that can make for some juicy grays in a plein air painting...

They had the van all fixed up by the end of the day and we were back on the road the next morning headed for Tucson and  PACE16....We sure had a great time in Santa Barbara!

A feature of most plein air painting events is the Quick Draw competition. Participating artists have a set time, in this case two hours to complete a painting from start to finish. The paintings are then brought back to the gallery and judged. I didn't win an award for my quick draw  painting but a lovely couple who watched me paint it, just as they promised,came to the exhibition and purchased it.

For some reason I was fooling around back at the Fine Art Center trying to frame a painting when I looked up and saw that everyone was gone. ...Then I realized that they all left for the quick draw!  I had a plan to go back to City Pier where I painted two years ago at PTP2013 so hopped in the van and raced down...Several artists were already set up and so I grabbed a spot and tossed my gear together late as usual! God was merciful and the painting just flowed on like someone else was painting and not me! Love when that happens!  
I was done in an hour and a half.............=]


Two years ago when I painted at City Pier in Port Angeles it was raining!  For fun, here's a video I took that day.

 It's the new year but I'm still posting last years paintings...oh well....my resolution, again,..is to try and keep up this year!...we'll see.........Happy New Year Friends!

"New Day on Liberty Bay" Poulsbo fishing boat, oil marinescape

I love my little town of Poulsbo. Especially quiet mornings down by the marina. Poulsbo has a Norwegian heritage and the city has made an effort to keep that "flavor" throughout the town. There is a small but energetic business community with galleries, shops of all sorts, the famous Sluys bakery that made "Poulsbo" bread common in most grocery stores and, of course, The Sons of Norway Hall where one can sample lutefisk during Viking Fest.

The marina still has fishing boats that come and sell salmon in season. They often moor the boats by the seawall at the mouth of the harbor.

The sun finally did come out for over a week even though it has been foggy in the mornings...I managed to catch some scenes down at the marina in Poulsbo last week....I was at Checkers for my opening reception.....By the way, the show is still up for the rest of January....The sun reflecting off the white hulls of the boats caught my eye.
