"Jim's Boatshed" plein air ,landscape, oil painting

We got a little taste of summer on Saturday. It actually got into the mid seventy's! A great day to get out for some PA. I didn't go far. This is Jim's shed where he is building a six meter sailboat to take to the worlds in 09.....Jim is Leighs husband and has his boat building business next to the studio.
Here's the preliminary sketch to fix the light and shadow position before starting to paint The big challenge in plein air painting is the changing light and conditions, so you need all the help you can get.

14x18 oil on stretched canvas $385.00

Another knockout, Robin. You've really been pushing color lately. Beautiful sketch as well. I hope you're back to your old self health-wise.

Another winner Robin.
I particularly love seeing your sketch along with the painting. Was the sketch done in a sketchbook? and do you take a lot of notes so you could work from this again? Do you always so a sketch first? Oops, too many question's............

Thanks Bill! Yes I am feeling much better and looking forward to traveling to Africa in June.

I am mixing a lot of color in little piles on my large glass pallet. Seems to be working good for me.

Hi Nancy, Thank you!

I carry a sketch book with me all the time. Sometimes I take color notes if the majority of the painting will be completed in the studio.

Most of the time I will do a sketch first, especially on larger canvases. This accomplishes two things. It gives you reference for light and cast shadow as the light moves. And it also prepares the hand for sketching the scene on the canvas when you are ready to paint. You can also fix compositional problems more easily

A beautiful job, Robin. The various purple-violet-lavenders against the various greens makes for an unusual and stunning color combination.

Very interesting perspective on this one! And the details are there but subtle...I like it!

Thank you Don! I was looking at a color wheel today and realized that a red violet is actually the complement of a yellow green in the secondary range! I was surprised myself at how well they looked together.
