There is a nice little beach in Kingston west of the ferry dock and close enough to visit if you have a longer wait. I wandered down one sunny afternoon during the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout hosted by the Cole Gallery and did this little study. It was the first painting to sell!  Apparently I am not the best judge of my own work. Debated about even entering it but glad I did!  =]

One morning we were scouting around during the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout for a scene to paint and came to the Cascadia Art Museum. They have a lot of nice plantings around the museum and the building itself has some history in Edmonds. I decided on this view of the Trumpet flowers that were blooming and the entrance to the museum.

 It was spitting rain when I set up for this painting in Kingston. I probably would not have tried this scene in the rain but I was still painting for the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout and wanted a variety of subjects and atmosphere. in this case it worked out. I was happy with the line drawing and as I was painting the owner of the foreground boat walked up and told me a little about the boat being an east coast design. He liked the painting so far and said he would come to the gala opening on Friday.  As it turned out this was not one of the paintings picked to show in the exhibition and he did not show up at the opening....but a few days later he came to the gallery and asked about the painting and I was able to sell the work to him.  Something like this has happened to me several times painting on location and it is really encouraging!

 As the title suggests I painted this on a Thursday afternoon during the first annual Edmonds Plein Air Paintout hosted by the Cole Gallery in September. They plan on keeping the love ( of art )alive by hosting this fun paintout every year in September.

I thought this view would be a challenge with cars coming and going and the sun moving pretty rapidly but I also have learned from experience that once you set up on the street and commit to a scene the encouragement from passers by and the pressure of competition can motivate you to stick with it until something usually shapes up. I spent all afternoon on this painting.  Once you paint one car you have painted a hundred and as you get the brush miles under your belt you can change shapes and colors at will.

This painting is available through the Cole Gallery in Edmonds and they have a 20% sale going right now so it's a good time to buy art for the holidays!

The great thing about the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout for me is that it encompasses both Edmonds and Kingston.  I spent several of the live paint days during the paintout working around Kingston. This is a view from the Kingston Slough a favorite local park with nice views of Apple Tree Cove and the Kingston ferry....Once again with my toes in the sand!  =]

This painting will be available at the Knowles Studio in Poulsbo for Arts in the Woods 2022.  If you plan on being in the North Kitsap area the second weekend in November don't miss this studio tour! The best in the Northwest!

I made a mistake in my last post.. This was the first painting I completed for the Edmonds Plein Air Paintout 2022..

 I got off the ferry walked up to get my panels stamped and then right back to the beach. It was a beautiful hot sunny day. I have taught several plein air workshops through the Cole Gallery and we always walk down to  Bracketts Landing to do the demo while everyone hangs out to paint.  I have painted the ferry from this location a few times so I thought it would be a good place to start. If you can nail a good ferry painting it can set the stage for the rest of the week. Not that it's easy because the ferry is only docked for about half an hour. It took three cycles for me to get this one. But hey, toes in the sand, beautiful beach, beautiful view....I wasn't exactly suffering... =]

 BTW, Cole Gallery is having a 20% off sale on a lot of the work currently in the gallery. They have some of the best representational artists working now and it may be a good time to pick up quality artwork at an affordable price!  

November is coming up and that means Arts in the Woods!  Always the second week in November This year the 11th, 12th and 13th. Awright!!  Gotta get back to the blog! Its been a month since we participated in the first annual Plein Air Edmonds Paintout and this was the first painting I completed for the competition. There was beautiful fog at the Edmonds Marsh and we set up quick to capture it.

The paintout was a blast and the Cole Gallery who hosted it has decided to do it again next year! That's good news for me since it is just a short ferry ride away and I love painting in Edmonds. I did eight paintings and will be posting them in the next week or so.

This was the first painting I did down by the Keystone Ferry during the Whidbey Island Plein Air competition.  The morning mist was just lifting and the soft shapes of driftwood and distant homes were appearing out of the fog. I laid my underpainting down quickly and then squinting I put in the dark and light shapes I saw not concerned yet with nouns but more with adjectives...in other words, not things but light and dark shapes. then going back in and modeling the cool light in the distance to the warmer tones in the foreground. This painting never made it into the show but is one of my favorites.

This small 6x8 was painted in the same area I did Cemetery Road. A birder with a scope spotted the hawk near me while I was painting and I ticked it in with my rigger brush.  I traded this painting for an extra day at the BnB I was staying on the island. My host was happy and so was I!

Another from the Whidbey Island event in August 2022.  We went up to Cemetery road a couple times. There are some sweeping views of Ebeys Landing and other cool stuff to paint. I liked the shadow patterns coming across the road in this scene with the added benefit of Mount Baker in the distance. This painting is still available! Been so busy with family trips, plein air events and all kinds of activities that the blog has been neglected again for most of the summer and there are still more events to come! Looking forward to things slowing down later this fall but first want to give you a heads up on what's coming up in September.

I have been doing a lot of art events with my son Maury this summer. We just finished up the Whidbey Island Plein Air event hosted by the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville, WA. The weather was perfect and we both had a blast painting beautiful Whidbey Island and hanging out with artist friends. Sorry I didn't let y'all know about it before it happened but like I said...It's been busy!!  =]

Between us we garnered 2 Honorable Mentions a Best of Show ( pictured above) and sold 4 paintings. Not too bad! 

Starting Sept. 5th we will be sharing the featured artist wall at The Front Street Gallery in Poulsbo.

 "Painting from Life" Father and Son,  Robin and Maury Weiss is the title of the exhibition and will display many of the plein air paintings we have been doing together and on our own around the Pacific Northwest. The show opens on the Second Saturday Artwalk in Poulsbo, Sept 10th at 5pm

SEPTEMBER 1, 2022 - OCTOBER 3, 2022

At the same time we will both be participating in an exciting new plein air painting competition hosted by the Cole Gallery in Edmonds Washington,  which will take place from September 1st thru the 12th and culminate with an artists reception and awards ceremony on the 15th of Sept. Be sure to stop by the Cole Gallery any time in September to see work by many of the artists but don't miss the reception on the 15th when all the work accepted into the show will be on display and available for purchase. To wrap up, be sure to put Arts in the Woods on your calendar. Always the second weekend in November the North Kitsap Studio tour is the best in the Northwest and attracts art lovers and collectors from around the region. We could not have picked two better days for the workshop in Edmonds through the Cole Gallery. The weather in April around the PNW can be a bit dicey. Before and after Sat and Sun the weather was cold and rainy but the workshop weather was warm and perfect aside from being a little windy on Saturday.

Above is the demo on the first day at Bracketts Landing Park by the ferry landing in Edmonds. We worked on achieving atmospheric distance by the use of color chroma and working edges along with emphasis on building value structure with the underpainting.  Check my website for upcoming workshops in 2022.

 My hardworking students who never complained about all the exercises I put them through.

The Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island is a great place to visit here in Kitsap County especially when the Rhodies start to bloom. This painting was done earlier in February along with a few more I have yet to post. Hopefully I can get there again to paint while the color is in it's glory. I have painted this view several times before in Skagit County. All the local painters are familiar with Rawlins Road. Looking this way you see the farms and fields of the agricultural land. Turn 180% and you see the marsh and coastal islands of the Puget Sound.  It was the wide open space and dramatic clouds you see in March around here that drew me to this scene.

The spring flowers have been awesome but the weather....not so much.....but that's okay because I have an awesome studio space!  I can set up still life's or just plop a handful of flowers in various vases scattered around and paint by the windows....

I had a tough time with all the yellow in this painting!  The goal was to make the yellow a big shape and define the flowers with subtle value and temperature changes. I sort of did that but still,  the vase looks better than the flowers.. 

My studio space... It's at the Knowles Studio in Poulsbo, WA. I have been working there for over ten years!  The studio owner and my colleague and friend is Leigh Knowles Metteer. She is an educator, print maker and all around amazing human!  We have a good time there making art, teaching art and talking about all kinds of stuff. Each year, the second weekend in November we participate in Arts in the Woods. Leigh is on the board of the Cultural Arts Foundation in Kitsap which puts on AITW. We also participate in many of the arts related events and competitions in the PNW region. 

The Knowles Studio is open to the public most week days and Saturdays.  You can check out the website HERE for more info on classes and events.

April 30 ; This one day Plein Air Painting Workshop is through Kitsap Arts in Silverdale, WA. We will be painting outside at the waterfront in Silverdale.

May 3-7;  I will be in Richland, WA for a Plein Air Washington Artists,  juried art and plein air painting competition through the Allied Art Association's Gallery at the Park.  More info on that HERE.

May 9-15  We will be attending the American Impressionist Society's Small Works Exhibition in Taos, NM .

"Port Townsend Marina" Plein air marine painting by Robin Weiss

Got away to paint outside a few weeks back at one of my favorite locations, Port Townsend.  There is a great little spot to set up by the marina with the added bonus of a coffee shop and bathroom near by. The weather was a mixed bag but good enough to get this one down on canvas in about three hours. 

To the right is the block in stage of the painting where I work out the composition and value structure.  I use a transparent fast drying color like M Grahams, Quinicridone Rust or Transparent Red Oxide. 

If you haven't tried M Graham paint yet, give it a go!  I love it for outside painting. The pigment is mixed with walnut oil instead of the more traditional linseed oil which gives it a looser viscosity and longer drying time. That helps with a wet-in-wet approach to paint application.

Some paintings are harder to photograph than others. That's the reason I have'nt posted this painting from last summer. I painted it at Bainbridge Island Winery when a few of us local artists gathered for a fun afternoon of painting and wine tasteing. I wasn't inspired by anything I saw in the landscape so decided to focus in on these lilies that were blooming in the bright sunshine. It went very fast and I left it loose and unfinished for a change. 

Recently this painting was entered and I am jazzed to say, accepted into the Plein Air Washington Artists juried exhibition at Gallery at the Park in Richland , WA. This exhibition will be in conjunction with a plein air competiton hosted by the Allied Arts Association and many of us PAWA artists will be participating.  If you are in the area you can come watch us paint and see the art!! From a photo I took while driving back from painting the marsh at the end of Rawlins road on Fir Island in Skagit county.  The moon coming up over the distant hills was a show stopper. I pulled over to take a few pics knowing it was too late to set up for another painting that day.  Of course pictures never seem to capture the moment you are in when on location and natural events like this occur. I did my best with the memory and the photo ref I took.

These happy cows were resting peacefully in the tall grass along highway 135 on the way to Crested Butte Colorado. I always stop to take pictures when I am passing through the area. Especially the Herefords. The patterns of the white faces and rust red bodies from a design standpoint are really interesting to me. It's fun to try and render individual attitudes and personalities.

We try and spend as much time as possible in Crested Butte not only because it is a beautiful area of the country and can be much cooler in the summer months, (like last year when it was 106 degrees in Washington), but because there is a great gallery there called the Oh Be Joyful that represents me and many other fine artists. Point no Point/Hahdskus original oil painting by Robin Weiss

I have been doing so many paintings at Point no Point it is getting hard to come up with titles for the work! After doing a little research I found an article about the history of the area. The Native American name for this piece of coastline along the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is Hahdskus. You can learn more about it HERE.

There is a bird watching platform not far down the marsh trail at Point no Point. It's a great place to watch the shore birds and the marsh waterfowl.  It's also a nice spot to gain a little elevation and set up a easel for painting.  That is the reason you have seen so many paintings from me of this view. They keep selling too....so I keep painting them. Since I have done this study, I worked on a larger 12x24. Will post soon.
